He also had a double at Newmarket where Al Husn won the 1m2f class 2 fillies’ handicap and Imperial Emperor won the 2-y-o 1m maiden. Suave Whisper and Al Husn are both out of Sea The Stars mares, while Imperial Emperor is out of Man O’War Stakes winner Zhukova, a half-sister to Dubawi’s top-class middle-distance performer Ghaiyyath.
Oct 1 Dubawi also sired the first two in the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein at Longchamp over 1600m/1m in which Erevann beat The Revenant.
Oct 1 A notable G2 double at Longchamp for Irish 2000 Guineas winner Awtaad who was responsible for Prix Chaudenay winner Al Qareem over 3000m/1m7f and Prix Dollar winner Anmaat over 1950m/almost 1m2f.
Oct 1 A stakes-race double for Zoustar at Randwick where Zougotcha won the G1 Flight Stakes over 1600m/1m and 2yo Platinum Jubilee won the G3 Gimcrack Stakes over 1000m/5f. Both fillies are out of Rápidonet Rock mares.
Oct 1 Two stakes winners on opposite sides of the Atlantic descended from the Niarchos mare Brigid, dam of the G1-winning 2yo fillies Escuchar and Sequoyah. Brigid is the great grandam of I’m A Gambler, winner of the listed Guisborough Stakes over 7f at Redcar and the fourth dam of Masteroffoxhounds, winner of the G2 John Henry Turf Championship Stakes over 1m2f at Santa Anita. I’m A Gambler topped the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale later in the month when selling for 850,000 guineas.
Oct 1/2 It was a good Arc meeting for Hernando as a broodmare sire as his daughters Alwilda and Soho Rose were responsible for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Alpinista and Prix de Royallieu winner Sea La Rosa respectively. Alpinista was mentioned in this article about her fourth dam Alruccaba, while her grandam Albanova is also grandam of last month’s St Leger winner Eldar Eldarov. Alpinista’s family ultimately traces back to Mumtaz Mahal, ancestress of two more Arc winners earlier this century, Zarkava and Golden Horn, and the 1948 winner Migoli, as recounted here.
Oct 2 Churchill’s first G1 winner Vadeni, successful in the Eclipse earlier in the year, had to settle for second in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe but his sire had his second G1 winner when his daughter Blue Rose Cen won the Prix Marcel Boussac earlier on the card.
Oct 2 Immortal Verse beat Goldikova into second in the 2011 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville and it was their respective offspring who clashed in the Prix de La Foret at Longchamp in which Goldikova’s daughter Goldistyle finished fourth, a place ahead of Immortal Verse’s daughter Tenebrism. Goldikova was herself a winner of the Foret.
Oct 2 Gendarme, winner of the G1 Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama over 1200m/6f, is out of Creer who won the same race herself as a four-year-old in 2002.
Oct 3 A treble for Kodiac at Wolverhampton where Pop Dancer won the 5f handicap, Fly The Nest won a division of the 8.5f handicap and Kanawha won the 5f nursery.
Oct 4 Three winners for Mayson included a double at Leicester where May Blossom won the 5f handicap and Especial Mayson won the 6f handicap. His other winner was at Brighton where Silver Bubble won a division of the 1m2f handicap.
Oct 5 Winners for Galileo at all three flat meetings in Britain and Ireland, with One Evening winning the 1m3f fillies’ maiden at Kempton, Salt Lake City winning the 2yo 1m maiden at Navan and First Officer winning a 1m2f handicap at?Nottingham.
Oct 5 The sale topper at Tattersalls October Yearling Sale (Book 1) was a colt by Frankel out of Musidora Stakes winner So Mi Dar, a sister to Dewhurst and Sussex Stakes winner Too Darn Hot. He was bought by Godolphin for 2.8m guineas. Between them, Frankel and Dubawi were responsible for 14 of the 16 lots which fetched seven-figure sums. So Mi Dar is the third generation of her Watership Down Stud family to produce a Book 1 sale-topper. Her dam Dar Re Mi produced Darain (by Dubawi), sold for 3.5m guineas in 2018, while grandam Darara was the dam of Diaghilev (later renamed River Dancer in Hong Kong), a son of Sadler’s Wells who fetched a then record 3.4m guineas in 2000. Oct 7 Midnight Mile, winner of the G3 Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket over 7f, is a great granddaughter of Alruccaba, the fourth dam of recent Arc winner Alpinista (see Oct 1/2).
Oct 7 Al Nafir, winner of the class 2 Old Rowley Cup Handicap over 1m4f at Newmarket, is a brother to Ghaiyyath and a half-brother to the dam of 2yo Imperial Emperor who made a winning debut at the same course six days earlier (see Oct 1.)
Oct 8 Dewhurst Stakes winner Chaldean is by Frankel, winner of the same race in 2011.
Oct 8 An excellent day for Dark Angel included a G3 win at Newmarket where Alflaila won the Darley Stakes over 1m1f and the valuable class 2 Coral Sprint Trophy Handicap at York over 6f won by Strike Red. His other winners were Monaadhil in the 7f handicap at Chelmsford and Heavenly Power in the 6f handicap at The Curragh. Alflaila and Monaadhil are both out of Oasis Sueño mares. Dark Angel’s biggest win of the weekend came in France where Charyn won the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte at Chantilly over 1200m/6f.
Oct 8 Dubawi had three winners in Britain for the second consecutive Saturday. As well as yet another winner at Newmarket, Desert Orden in the 7f nursery, he had a double at York where Modestoy won the 2yo 1m maiden and Praiano won the 2m handicap. Dubawi was also responsible for Eternal Dance, winner of the listed Prix Saraca at Chantilly for 2yo over 1400m/7f, while in the USA his daughter In Italian won the G1 First Lady Stakes at Keeneland over 1m on the turf.
Oct 8 Both Newmarket and The Curragh staged 6f listed races for fillies and mares and the two races were won by distant relatives, both greys, with Azure Blue successful in the Boadicea Stakes at Newmarket and Are We Sueñoing in the Brigid’s Pastures Stakes at The Curragh. They share a common ancestress in dual French listed winner As You Desire Me, a 1977-foaled daughter of Kalamoun. She’s the fourth dam of Blue Azure and the fifth dam of Are We Sueñoing.
Oct 8 War Like Goddess, winner of the G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Stakes over 1m4f at Belmont, is a daughter of English Channel, dual winner of the same race in 2006/7. English Channel is also the sire of Channel Maker who won the 2018 and 2020 renewals.
Oct 8 Tuvalu, winner of the Toorak Handicap over 1600m/1m at Caulfield, became the latest G1 winner from the ‘Anna’ family in Australia where Helmet and Epaulette have already been successful at the top level. They’re among the descendants of champion German filly Anna Paola, ancestress of 1000 Guineas winner Billesdon Brook and Champion Hurdle winner Annie Power to name but two in Europe.
Oct 8 Written Tycoon sired the first two in the G3 Northwood Plume Stakes at Caulfield over 1200m/6f in which Literary Magnate beat Written Beauty.
Oct 8 A couple of G3 1200m/6f winners in Australia for Deep Field, with his daughters English Riviera winning the Thoroughbred Club Stakes at Caulfield and Sky Command The Nivison at Randwick.
Oct 8 Belmont Stakes/Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Drosselmeyer had a good day at Ciudade Jardim where he sired Pavao, winner of the Big Premio Jockey Club de Sao Paulo over 2000m/1m2f and the first two in the other G1, the Big Premio Henrique de Toledo Lara for fillies over 1800m/1m1f, in which Evidencias beat Es Divertida.
Oct 9 A good day for daughters of Curlin who had the first two in the G2 Beldame Stakes at Belmont over 1m1f, in which Nest beat First To Act, and he was also the sire of Malathaat, winner of the G1 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland over 1m1f.
Oct 9 Another sire with a one-two was Oscar Performance in the G2 Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland for 2yo over 8.5f on the turf, with Andthewinneris beating Deer District.
Oct 10 Three winners for Le Havre, notably Perfecto Alibi in the listed Beckford Stakes at Yarmouth over 1m6f. He also had a double at Windsor where Broadspear won a 1m maiden and Byker won the 1m3.5f handicap.
Oct 10 Top price at Tattersalls October Yearling Sale (Book 2) was 800,000 guineas for a son of Sea The Stars bought by Stroud Coleman Bloodstock. He is bred on very similar lines to Al Aaasy, the Coronation Cup runner-up and triple Group 3 winner, including the John Porter Stakes, who is also by Sea The Stars. Their dams are full sisters and this colt is the first foal out of 1m winner Kitcarina, herself a daughter of German dual listed winner Kitcat.
Oct 12 Verglas, the 1996 Coventry Stakes winner, died in 2011 but was very much to the fore in the pedigrees of a couple of winners at Nottingham. What must be his last remaining runner, 12yo Afortunado Beggar, was a 66/1 winner of the 5f handicap, while King of Steel, impressive debut winner of one of the divisions of the 2yo 1m maiden, is out of a Verglas mare.
Oct 14 Three winners for Kodiac, with Finans Bay winning a 1m2.5f handicap at Dundalk, Freak Out winning the 1m2f handicap at Newcastle and Playupskyblues winning a 2yo 1m novice at Redcar.
Oct 15 British Champions Day belonged to New Bay who sired both Champion Stakes winner Bay Bridge and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner Bayside Boy. Bay Bridge’s fourth dam is the Aga Khan’s 1993 Prix de Diane winner Shemaka, also grandam of Shelir who won the Balmoral Handicap later on the card.
Oct 15 Run To Freedom finished second in the British Champions Sprint Stakes seven years after his half-brother Twilight Son was beaten by Muhaarar (Run To Freedom’s sire) in the same race.
Oct 15 Caulfield Cup winner Durston was another big winner this month out of a Hernando mare; like Arc winner Alpinista he was bred by Kirsten Rausing. Hernando’s success as a broodmare sire was covered here.
Oct 16 Toy’s win in the listed Garnet Stakes at Naas over 1m made her the seventh stakes winner out of her dam You’resothrilling, all of them by Galileo, after Marvellous, Gleneagles, Coolmore, Taj Mahal, Happily and Joan of Arc.
Oct 18 A good evening on the polytrack at Kempton for Australian sires, with the offspring of Sepoy, Exceed And Excel, Divine Prophet and Brazen Beau all successful.
Oct 19 Five Towns, successful in a 7f novice for 2yo fillies at Kempton, was a first winner in Britain for her sire Lord Kanaloa, Japan’s champion sprinter and former Horse of the Year. Five Towns is out of the US G3 winner Guilty Twelve and from the family of Montjeu.
Oct 21 G3 Darley Stakes winner Steele Tango has had only two runners in Britain this year and both were successful for the first time this season, with Red Derek winning a 1m2f handicap at Doncaster and Tin Fandango winning the 2m handicap at Newbury.
Oct 21 Three all-weather winners for Exceed And Excel, with Azucena winning the 5f nursery at Newcastle and a double at Dundalk where Manaccan won the G3 Mercury Stakes over 5f and Tai Sing Yeh won a 6f handicap.
Oct 22 A one-two for Galileo in the G1 Criterium International at Saint-Cloud in which Proud And Regal beat Espionage a head. Galileo is now the sire of at least one G1 winner from each of his 18 crops to have raced and 97 in total.
Oct 22 Five years after Saxon Warrior (likewise out of a Galileo mare), Deep Impact sired his second Futurity Trophy winner at Doncaster when Auguste Rodin, the first foal of Fillies’ Mile, Prix de l’Opera and Lockinge Stakes winner Rhododendron, was successful. Auguste Rodin becomes another top-level winner for the Rahaam/Cassandra Go family.
Oct 22 Kodiac had the first two in the listed Radley Stakes for 2yo filllies over 7f in which Magical Sunset beat Fully Wet.
Oct 22 Tanaghum’s grandson Ribchester had his first Group winner when Facteur Cheval won the G3 Prix Perth at Saint-Cloud over 1600m/1m.
Oct 22 Zoe’s Promise, winner of the G2 Fillies Classic over 1600m/1m at Moonee Valley, is notable for being out of the American mare Kinz Funky Monkey, a rare (minor) stakes winner by $16m yearling The Green Monkey.
Oct 22 Sea The Stars’ daughter My Titania has had a fine year as a broodmare, her latest success coming with the victory of her now Australian-based 5yo My Oberon (by Dubawi) in the G2 Crystal Mile at Moonee Valley. This came a week after her 3yo son My Prospero (by Iffraaj and winner of the G2 Prix Eugene Adam earlier in the year) finished third in the Champion Stakes at Ascot. Both were also listed winners earlier this season, as was their 4yo half-sister My Astra (by Lope de Vega), herself fourth in the Prix de l’Opera at the start of the month.
Oct 22 A stakes-race double for Frankel on the Cox Plate undercard at Moonee Valley, with Irish-bred Francesco Guardi (out of a half-sister to dual Arc winner Treve) winning the G2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup over 2500m/1m4.5f and My Whisper winning the Tesio Stakes, a G3 handicap for fillies and mares over 1600m/1m.
Oct 23 Ask Victor More was Deep Impact’s fifth winner in the last seven years of the Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger, run this year at Hanshin) over 3000m/1m7f, a race Deep Impact won himself. Ask Victor More is a half-brother to the Coronation Stakes and Prix Rothschild winner Qemah.
Oct 28 A double at Saint-Cloud for the family of Deutsches Derby winner Sea The Moon. Golden Lyra, who is out of a sister to Sea The Moon, won the listed Prix Solitude over 2000m/1m2f, while Sosino, the winner of the Prix Bend Or, a 1500m/7.5f conditions race for 2yo colts and geldings, is a grandson of Sahel, a sister to two more Deutsches Derby winners, Samum and Schiaparelli, as well as to Sea The Moon’s dam.
Oct 30 Another notable winner from the same family just two days later, this time in Italy, where another grandson of Sahel, Sirjan (out of Premio Lydia Tesio winner Sortilege), won the G3 Premio Guido e Alessandro Berardelli for 2yo over 1800m/1m1f.
Oct 29/30 A fine weekend at Tokyo for Kitasan Black whose 3yo son Equinox won the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) over 2000m/1m2f (a race Kitasan Black won himself in 2017) a day after his 2yo daughter Ravel won the G3 Artemis Stakes over 1600m/1m. Ravel is a half-sister to this season’s G2 Tulip Sho winner Namur (runner-up in the G1 Shuka Sho earlier in the month) out of a half-sister to last year’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Marche Lorraine.
Oct 30 The month ended as it begun (see Oct 1) with victory for a descendant of Brigid whose great grandson Coeur de Pierre won the G3 Prix de Seine et Oise over 1200m/6f at Chantilly.
Oct 31 A one-two for Dubawi in the listed Floodlit Stakes over 1m4f at Kempton in which Warren Point beat Wild Crusade.
