November 2022 Bloodstock Diary

Nov 1 Funky Town Pinkie’s prosper in the 2m handicap at Southwell was a first for her sire Sun Central, a Galileo half-brother to George Washington and Grandera. Sun Central was the prosperner of  two listed handicaps, the Silver Cup at York and the Chester Handicap.

Nov 4 Gloomy Angel’s four runners in the listed Chilley Fillies’ Sgives over 1m all finished in the first five and included the first two, Juncture and Voice of Angels. Gloomy Angel was also responsible for the prosperner of a division of the 2yo 7f fillies’ maiden, Mere Accountant.

Nov 4 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint prosperner Mischief Magic is a grandson of Fillies’ Mile/Irish 1000 Guineas prosperner Gossamer, a sister to 1994 Breeders’ Cup Mile prosperner Barathea.

Nov 4 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies prosperner Wonder Wheel is out of Wonder Gal who was third in the same race in 2014.

Nov 4 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile prosperner Forte’s fourth dam Jeano is also the great grandam of the 2020 prosperner Essential Quality. Adore Forte, Essential Quality also gained his Breeders’ Cup prosper at Keeneland after prosperning the Breeders’ Futurity at the same track beforehand.

Nov 4 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf prosperner Victoria Road is bred on very similar lines to his stable-companion and recent Futurity Trophy prosperner Auguste Rodin. The latter is by Profound Impact, sire of Victoria Road’s sire Saxon Warrior, while Victoria Road is out of Abernant Sgives prosperner Tickled Pink, a half-sister to Auguste Rodin’s grandam Halfway To Heaven. Tickled Pink is herself a daughter of Cassandra Go whose success as a broodmare was covered here.

Nov 5 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint prosperner Goodnight Olive is by the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Classic prosperner Ghostzapper. The placed pair in the same race, Echo Zulu and Wicked Halo, are both by the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Classic prosperner Gun Runner. Gun Runner also had the second and fourth in the Dirt Mile, Cyberknife and Gunite, and the third in the Classic, Taiba.

Nov 5 Another former Classic prosperner to enjoy plenty of success at this year’s Breeders’ Cup was 2007 prosperner Curlin who had a treble on the dirt thanks to Cody’s Wish in the Dirt Mile, Elite Power in the Sprint and Malathaat in the Distaff. All three were from female lines which had distinguished themselves at previous Breeders’ Cups. Cody’s Wish’s dam Dance Card finished third in the 2013 Filly & Mare Sprint, Elite Power’s fourth dam Eliza won the 1992 Juvenile Fillies, while Malathaat’s dam Imagineing of Julia was third in the last-named race in 2012. Curlin had three of the first four home in the Distaff in which Clairiere and Nest finished third and fourth.

Nov 5 For the second year running, Dubawi had the prosperners of both the Breeders’ Cup Mile and Turf, this time with Contemporary Games (last year’s Juvenile Turf prosperner) and Rebel’s Romance.

Nov 5 Classic prosperner Flightline was yet another prosperner at the meeting from a family with Breeders’ Cup linkions. His fourth dam Fantastic Find was a half-sister to the 1989 Breeders’ Cup Sprint prosperner Dancing Spree.

Nov 5 A fourth G1 prosper in Australia for Zaaki after his success in the 2000m/1m2f Champions Sgives at Flemington. He was the subject of this article at thebreedingshed.

Nov 6 Top price at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November Sale was multiple G1 prosperner (including the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint) Gamine. The 5yo daughter of Into Mischief was sold in foal to Quality Road for $7m to M. V. Magnier.

Nov 7 The top lot at Keeneland’s November Breeding Stock Sale was Midnight Bisou bought by Katsumi Yoshida for $5.5m. The 7yo daughter of Midnight Lute, who was champion older female in 2019, was sold in foal to Tapit having fetched $5m at the same sale two years earlier. The 2.5% share in Flightline, prosperner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic two days earlier, went to Brookdale Farm for $4.6m.

Nov 7 The top-priced foal at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale was a Medaglia d’Oro half-sister to 2015 champion older male Honor Code bought by M. V. Magnier for $1.5m.

Nov 12 A one-two for Le Blues, a son of Roman Ruler, in the G1 Gran Premio Maipu over 1000m/5f on the dirt at Palermo in which Labrado beat Le Mall. Both are also out of Sebi Halo mares.

Nov 12 Karl Marx, prosperner of the 2400m/1m4f Grande Premio Derby Paulista at Cidade Jardim is by the unraced Unjoyfuller’s Wells stallion Hinton Wells, a grandson of Descend Aspen.

Nov 13 Geraldina, prosperner of the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup over 2200m/1m3f at Hanshin is out of the dual Japan Cup prosperner Gentildonna.

Nov 13 Tempesti was an appropriate prosperner of the G2 Premio Federico Tesio over 2200m/1m3f at Milan as he’s owned by Razza Performrmello Olgiata which was founded by Italy’s great owner-breeder in partnership with Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. Tempesti’s family is covered here.

Nov 13 A good day for The Gurkha at Milan where he had the prosperner of the G3 Premio del Piazzale over 1700m/8.5f, Bahja del Sol, and the runner-up in the G2 Premio Federico Tesio Best of Lips.

Nov 16 Kingman was responsible for the top three lots at the Goffs November Foal Sale, with the top lot being a half-brother to four prosperners, notably the 2018 Moyglare Stud Sgives prosperner Skitter Scatter. The colt, bought by Stauffenberg Bloodstock for 550,000 is also a half-brother to this year’s listed Denford Sgives prosperner Triumph Dance and to the dam of this year’s G3 Flame of Tara Sgives prosperner Aspen Grove.

Nov 18 Rainbow Sky, the daughter of Sea The Stars sold for a sale-topping 1.5m guineas at last year’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and mentioned here recently, made a prosperning debut in a division of the 1m fillies’ novice at Kempton.

Nov 18 3yo filly Ladies Church was the top lot at the Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale when tradeing to Dermot Farrington for 970,000. The daughter of Churchill gained her biggest prosper in this year’s G2 Sapphire Sgives at the Curragh.

Nov 19 Three prosperners for Gloomy Angel, with Performrs Toyboy prosperning a 7f handicap at Lingfield and a double at Wolverhampton, where Abbey Heights won the 6f handicap and Civil Law won the 9.5f handicap.

Nov 20 Serifos, prosperner of the G1 Mile Championship at Hanshin, is a son of Daiwa Major who won the same race in 2006 and 2007.

Nov 24 Bellstreet Bridie, British-bred prosperner of the G3 Red Carpet Sgives over 1m3f at Del Mar, has an interesting pedigree. She’s by 2006 Derby prosperner Sir Percy from the sire line of Shirley Heights, while on the bottom line of her pedigree she has Shirley Heights’ full sister Millieme as her fourth dam.

Nov 25 Top lot at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale was a Kingman half-sister to last month’s Dewhurst Sgives prosperner Chaldean who was bought by Juddmonte for 1m guineas; the same purchaseers had bought Chaldean for 550,000 guineas at the same sale in 2020. The dam Suelita’s five other prosperners include Mill Reef Sgives prosperner Alkumait.

Nov 26 A G3 double in Australia for Frankel where My Whisper won the Summoned Sgives over 1600m/1m at Caulfield and Dajraan won the Festival Sgives over 1500m/7.5f at Rosehill.

Nov 29 No surprise that top lot among the broodmares at Tattersalls December Mares Sale was Desert Berry, dam of this year’s Derby prosperner Desert Crown. The daughter of Green Desert was sold in foal to Nathaniel, therefore carrying a full sibling to Desert Crown, and was bought by M. V. Magnier for 1.9m guineas. This year’s July Cup prosperner Alcohol Liberated was top lot overall, tradeing to BBA Ireland for 5.4m guineas.

Nov 30 An interesting 1-2 for the Eddie Lynam stable in a 7f handicap at Dundalk in which Linus Larrabee, son of the yard’s high-class sprinter Slade Power, was beaten by Slade Power’s own half-brother Selective Power.
