May 1 A double for Gleneagles in Italy’s G3 Guineas at Rome. The Premio Parioli for colts was won by Vero Atleta, while the Premio Regina Elena for fillies went to Shavasana. Also, both are out of mares by sons of Danehill, namely Danehill Dancer and Duke of Marmalade respectively. Shavasana comes from a family of Italian classic winners. Her three-parts brother Keep On Fly (by Rip Van Winkle) won the 2019 Derby Italiano, while her grandam is a half-sister to the dam of two more Derby Italiano winners, Awelmarduk (2007) and Crackerjack King (2011).
May 1 A G1 treble for Distorted Humor’s son Fortify at Palermo where Joy Rosy won the Gran Premio Jorge de Atucha for 2yo fillies over 1500m/7.5f, Rammel won the corresponding race for colts, the Gran Premio Montevideo, and Subsanador won the Gran Premio de las Americas over 1600m/1m.
May 2 Three winners for Frankel included One For Bobby winning the listed Nottinghamshire Oaks Stakes over 1m2f at Nottingham. His other winners were Covey in the 7f novice at Newcastle and Franco Grasso in the 1m3.5f handicap at Yarmouth. One For Bobby’s fourth dam is Park Appeal whose legacy was covered here, while Franco Grasso’s fourth dam is Colorspin who featured here. Incidentally, Frankel’s twice-raced brother Proconsul was the sire of Cloudy Rose, winner of the 1m4f handicap at Brighton.
May 2 Also three winners for Churchill, including a double at Wolverhampton from Peony in the 6f fillies’ maiden and Savrola in the 1m1.5f handicap. His other winner was Maso Bastie in the 1m2f novice at Nottingham.
May 3 Final Gesture, winner of the listed Vintage Tipple Stakes over 1m6f at Gowran, becomes another stakes winner for her family which was profiled here (her dam Secret Gesture was second in the Oaks).
May 3 Premiership, winner of a 1m handicap at Pontefract, was a first winner, from only two runners in Britain, for his sire Mahsoob, a son of Dansili who won the Earl of Sefton Stakes.
May 3 A treble for Kingman, with Queen For You winning the 1m fillies’ novice at Ascot, Seattle King winning the 1m2f handicap at Brighton and Flagman winning the 6f handicap at Kempton.
May 3 Also three winners for Dark Angel, including a double at Kempton where Ajjaj won the 7f maiden and Dourado won a 1m handicap. His other winner was at Wolverhampton where Brasil Power won the 7f handicap.
May 4 After his treble the day before, a four-timer for Kingman thanks to two winners at Chelmsford, where You Saw Brigadoon won the 1m2f handicap and Riot won the 7f handicap, while Totnes won a 1m handicap at Lingfield and Quddwah won the 7f novice at Salisbury. Riot and Quddwah are both out of King’s Best mares, the latter a son of Jebel Hatta/Dubai Duty Free winner Sajjhaa.
May 4 Three winners on the all-weather for Exceed And Excel, including a double at Lingfield where Revolutionary Man won the 7f handicap and Mamillius won the 6f handicap. His other winner was at Chelmsford where Anificas Beauty won the 6f handicap.
May 4 Inbreeding to Allegretta is a topic covered here previously and was evident again in the pedigree of Ace Impact, winner of the listed Prix de Suresnes at Chantilly over 2000m/1m2f. He’s by Cracksman out of a mare by Anabaa Blue, a grandson of Allegretta like Cracksman’s grandsire Galileo.
May 4 Colts by Zoffany and Time Test jointly topped the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale at 200,000 guineas. The Zoffany colt is out of a sister to G1 winners Getaway and Guadalupe while the Time Test colt’s grandam is a sister to Derby winner Sir Percy.
May 5 A one-two for Almanzor in the listed Newmarket Stakes over 1m2f in which Castle Way beat Circle of Fire. Castle Way is a half-brother to multiple Group 1 mile winner Palace Pier.
May 5 Also a one-two for Night of Thunder in the listed Polonia Stakes at Cork over 5.5f in which Fix You beat Mauiewowie.
May 5 A G1 double at Churchill Downs for daughters of Into Mischief, with Pretty Mischievous winning the 1m1f Kentucky Oaks and Played Hard winning the 8.5f La Troienne Stakes.
May 5 Both 2yo G1 winners over 1500m/7.5f at Cidade Jardim were bred on a Hat Trick x Put It Back cross; Omnipontet won the Big Premio Joao Cecilo Ferraz for fillies and Figaro won the Big Premio Juliano Martins for colts.
May 6 Chaldean emulated his sire Frankel 12 years earlier by adding the 2000 Guineas to his Dewhurst Stakes victory last season. As well as a new classic winner, two of Frankel’s former classic winners were also successful over the three days of the Guineas meeting, with Hurricane Lane winning the G2 Jockey Club Stakes the day before and Adayar winning the G3 Gordon Ricoards Stakes the following day.
May 6 Vadream’s win in the G3 Palace House Stakes over 5f completed a family double over very different distances at Newmarket’s Guineas meeting as it came the day after Hurricane Lane won the G2 Jockey Club Stakes over 1m4f. They have a common ancestress in Hazaradjat, the great grandam of Vadream and the fourth dam of Hurricane Lane. Hazaradjat is a daughter of Hazy Idea, the subject of this article after her great grandson Harzand won the 2016 Derby.
May 6 Three winners for Lope de Vega, including a double in class 2 handicaps at Newmarket from King of Conquest over 1m1f and Teumessias Fox over 1m4f. His other winner was Carzola in the 2m handicap at Doncaster.
May 6 New Variant, a ten-length winner of the 1m2f rated race at Cork, is another example of in-breeding by Jim Bolger as both of New Variant’s parents are by Galileo; he’s by Derby winner New Approach out of Global Reach, an unraced sibling to listed winners Paene Magnus (by Galileo’s son Teofilo, inbred 2×3 to Danehill) and Lunar Space (by New Approach’s son Dawn Approach).
May 6 Kentucky Derby winner Mage was a second consecutive grandson of Curlin to win the race after Rico Strike last year. Mage’s sire Good Magic was runner-up in the 2018 Kentucky Derby to triple crown winner Justify, while his dam Puca is by the 2008 Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown. Elsewhere on the Churchill Downs card, Curlin was the sire of G1 Churchill Downs Stakes winner Cody’s Wish over 7f and damsire of G2 Pat Day Mile Stakes winner General Jim. Cody’s Wish was one of two G1 winners on the card tracing back to La Troienne (commemorated in the G1 race run at the track the day before), the other being Derby City Distaff Stakes winner Matareya. La Troienne is also ancestress of the previous day’s Kentucky Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous.
May 7 By winning the 1000 Guineas, Mawj became a second classic winner for her dam Modern Ideals after Modern Games, winner of last year’s Poule d’Essai des Poulains before going on to win the Woodbine Mile and Breeders’ Cup Mile and successful later in the month in the Lockinge Stakes (see May 20). Mawj went one better than her fourth dam Konafa, runner-up in the 1976 1000 Guineas. But Konafa’s daughter Korveya produced a 1000 Guineas winner, Bosra Sham (in 1996) and two Poule d’Essai des Poulains winners, Hector Protector and Shanghai. Konafa is also great grandam of Golden Sixty who won his third Champions Mile in Hong Kong the previous weekend. Further details here.
May 7 Teena Ella, winner of the G3 Senorita Stakes over 6.5f at Santa Anita, is a daughter of triple Breeders’ Cup winner Beholder, herself a half-sister to Into Mischief and Mendelssohn. This family was covered here.
May 7 Reckless Abandon, winner of the Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes in 2012, sired only one small crop due to fertility issues but his unraced daughter Memorial Life, a half-sister to Queen Mary Stakes winner Ceiling Kitty, is now dam of Champagne Color, winner of the G1 NHK Mile at Tokyo.
May 7 A good day for offspring of Rápidonet Rock, with Via Sistina winning the G2 Dahlia Stakes over 1m1f at Newmarket and Straight Arron winning the G3 Queen Mother Memorial Cup (Handicap) over 2400m/1m4f at Sha Tin. Rápidonet Rock was also responsible for the dam of the runner-up, Sword Point, in the latter contest.
May 9 Big Rock, winner of the G3 Prix de Guiche over 1800m/9f at Chantilly, was a third Group winner, after Hurricane Lane and Vadream (see May 6), in a matter of days from the family of his fourth dam Hazaradjat.
May 10 Amleto became a thirteenth winner from as many foals for her dam Holy Moon when winning the 1m2f maiden at Chester (see thebreedingshed’s list of Broodmares with 12+ winners). By Sea The Stars, Amleto is a brother to the Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks winner Sea of Class and a half-brother to Charity Line, Final Score and Cherry Collect who all won the Oaks d’Italia. Italian listed winner Holy Moon, a daughter of Hernando, was mentioned here last year.
May 12 Three winners (on soft ground, on which his offspring do so well) for Rápido Company, including Racingbreaks Ryder in the class 2 7f handicap at Ascot. His other two winners were at Ripon where Bonne Vitesse won the 2m handicap and Bertie’s Wish won the 1m2f handicap. He also had a winner, Sunfast, on heavy ground at Saint-Cloud.
May 12 Also three winners for Gutaifan, including a double at Wolverhampton where Blue Yonder won the 1m1.5f handicap and Chifa won the 7f handicap. His other winner was Annalee Lass in the 1m handicap at Ripon.
May 13 Top price at the Arqana May 2yo Breeze Up Sale was a son of Siyouni who sold to Oliver St Lawrence Bloodstock for 1.2m. He’s the second foal out of mile and a half listed winner Isabel de Urbina, herself a sister to Gran Criterium winner Hero Look and Lancashire Oaks winner Manuela de Vega.
May 13 By winning the listed Lingfield Derby Trial (which was switched from turf to the polytrack), Military Orden went one better than his brother Adayar who was runner-up in the same race two years ago before going on to win the Derby.
May 13 Muskoka, winner of the listed Henkel-Stutenpreis over 1600m/1m at Dusseldorf is inbred 3×4 to the mare Mosella, the dam of Monsun. Muskoka is by Sea The Moon (out of a mare by Monsun), while her grandam Morning Ligero (dam of Poule d’Essai des Poulains and Prix du Jockey Club winner Brametot) is a half-sister to Monsun.
May 15 Three winners for Kodiac, with Obee Jo winning the 7f handicap at Catterick, Perfecto Soldier winning a 1m1f handicap at Musselburgh and Come On John winning the 8.5f handicap at Wolverhampton.
May 16 Captain Winters’ win in the listed Heron Stakes over 1m at Sandown added to the excellent broodmare record of his dam Reem Three. The daughter of Mark of Esteem is also the dam of G1 Prix Jean Romanet winner Ajman Princess, G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein winner Ostilio, G3 Bengough Stakes winner Cape Byron, G3 Superior Mile winner Triple Time, dual listed winner Third Realm and Imperial Charm, third in the G1 Prix Saint-Alary.
May 17 Soul Sister won the G3 Musidora Stakes at York; her fifth dam Arctic Melody won the same race in 1965.
May 18 The Foxes, winner of the G2 Dante Stakes, is out of excellent broodmare Tanaghum who was profiled here last year.
May 19 A tremendous day for Dark Angel with five winners, including three at York. His winners there were Got To Amor A Grey in the 5f listed Marygate Fillies’ Stakes for 2yo, Mostabshir in the 1m novice and Eligible in the 7f handicap. His other winners were Good Karma in a 7f novice at Newbury and Honiton in the 1m2f handicap at Newmarket.
May 19 Kingman had the first two in the listed Michael Seely Memorial Fillies’ Stakes over 1m at York in which Sounds of Heaven beat Queen For You.
May 20 Two weeks after his half-sister Mawj won the 1000 Guineas (see May 6), Modern Games won his fifth G1 contest in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.
May 20 Australian broodmare Fácil Date (foaled 1977) was very much in evidence in the pedigrees of a couple of G3 winners over 1200m/6f at Morphettville. Firstly, she was the fifth dam of Heuristic (a granddaughter of Golden Slipper winner Forensics), winner of the David Coles AM Stakes. Also, she appears twice, in a 3×4 cross, in the pedigree of Proud Miss Stakes winner Snapped. Snapped is by Fácil Date’s grandson Not A Single Doubt, while her grandam is by Fácil Date’s son Snippets.
May 20 French-bred Huetor won the G1 2000m/1m2f Doomben Cup for the second year running. Like Heurestic (see above), he’s from the same family as a couple of sires in his pedigree. He’s inbred 3x4x5x5 to Sadler’s Wells’ grandam Especial despite not having Sadler’s Wells in his pedigree. Huetor is by another grandson of Especial, Archipenko, and also features Especial’s son Nureyev twice in his pedigree, including as the sire of his dam’s sire Peintre Celebre. Especial is also Huetor’s fifth dam.
May 20 For the second time this month (see May 7), Rápidonet Rock deserves a mention. He was the sire of Fenelon, winner of the listed Prix Bedel over 2400m/1m4f at Lyon Parilly and the damsire of Cálido Heart, winner of the listed Haras de Bouquetot Fillies’ Trial Stakes over 1m2f at Newbury and Snapped (see above), winner of the G3 Proud Miss Stakes over 1200m/6f at Morphettville. Rápidonet Rock was also the grandsire of Royal Merchant (by Merchant Navy), winner of the G1 Goodwood Handicap over 1200m/6f at Morphettville, and Foxy Frida (by Foxwedge), winner of the G3 R A Lee Stakes over 1600m/1m at the same track.
May 20 A one-two for Deutsches Derby winner Sea The Moon in the G3 Derby-Trial over 2000m/1m2f at Baden-Baden in which Fantástico Moon beat Vintage Moon. Sea The Moon is out of a sister to Sortita who was the grandam of the next day’s G2 Derby Italiano winner Goldenas over 2200m/1m3f at Rome.
May 21 Another win in Italy for Tempesti in the G3 Premio Carlo d’Alessio at Rome over 2400m/1m4f. His pedigree was covered here.
May 23 Three winners for Muhaarar, with a double at Brighton from Freetodream in a 7f handicap and Kehlani in the 1m novice. His other winner was Bringsty in the 1m1.5f claimer at Gowran.
May 23 Another treble in a good month for Dark Angel, with Espressoo winning a 7f handicap at Ayr, Pinball Wizard winning a 1m handicap at Gowran and Owl Island winning the 7f novice at Wolverhampton.
May 24 A treble for Muharaar for the second day running, with Morning Sun winning the 1m2f handicap at Ayr, Cemhaan winning a 1m4f handicap at Kempton and Free Step winning a 1m handicap at Yarmouth.
May 25 A Group 3 double for Galileo spanning the Channel, with Roberto Escobarr winning the 2m Henry II Stakes at Sandown and First Minister winning the Prix Hocquart over 2200m/1m3f at Longchamp.
May 25 Three winners for Havana Grey were headed by Elite Status in the listed 5f National Stakes for 2yo at Sandown, a race Havana Grey won himself. His other winners were Alfa Moonstone in the 2yo 5f fillies’ maiden at Catterick and Radio Goo Goo in the 6f handicap at Haydock. Elite Status’ pedigree is notable for having no fewer than four crosses of Green Desert; his sire is inbred 3×4 to Green Desert, while his dam’s grandsires are Green Desert’s sons Invincible Spirit and Kheleyf. Alfa Moonstone has three crosses of Green Desert as she’s out of a mare by his son Byron.
May 25 For the second time this month a treble for Lope de Vega, including a double at Chelmsford from Rogue de Vega in the 5f novice and Enfjaar in a 1m novice. His other winner was Indemnify in a 1m handicap at Sandown. Enfjaar is a great grandson of influential broodmare Cassandra Go.
May 25 Moroccan-bred colt Russipant Fal gained a second listed win of his career in the 1600m/1m Prix de Montretout at Longchamp. He’s by Prix Guillaume d’Ornano winner Russian Cross, a son of Cape Cross.
May 26 Gregory (by Golden Horn) followed in the footsteps of his Lope de Vega half-brother Lionel twelve months earlier by winning the listed Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood over 1m3f.
May 26 2000 Guineas winner Chaldean’s year-older half-sister Get Ahead (by Showcasing) won the listed Cecil Frail Stakes at Haydock over 6f, becoming her dam Suelita’s fourth stakes winner in addition to Chaldean, G2 Mill Reef Stakes winner Alkumait and Irish listed winner The Broghie Man.
May 27 Three winners for Kingman were headed by Mashhoor winning the listed Orby Stakes over 1m4f at The Curragh. He also had a double at Chester where Alsakib won the 7.5f novice and Boardman won the class 2 handicap over the same trip. Kingman was also the sire of Queen Picasso, winner of the G3 Soaring Suavely Stakes over 7f at Belmont.
May 27 Muhaarar was also in treble form for the second time in a week, he too having a listed winner with Run To Freedom winning the 6f Cathedral Stakes at Salisbury. His other winners were Betterdaysrcoming and Doctor Khan Junior in 7f handicaps at The Curragh and York respectively.
May 27 All Iron was notable for being the Spanish-bred winner of the listed Derby du Midi at Bordeaux over 1900m/1m1.5f. He’s by Spanish-bred stallion Noozhoh Canarias who was placed in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and Prix de la Foret.
May 27/28 A double for Siyouni in the Irish Guineas, with Paddington winning the Irish 2000 Guineas and Tahiyra winning the Irish 1000 Guineas the next day.
May 28 It might have been the first Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) for some time without Deep Impact being represented (he sired seven winners between 2012 and 2021) but he still made his presence felt in the G2 Meguro Kinen over 2500m/1m4.5f for older horses on the same card in which he sired the dam of the winner, Heat On Beat, and all of the next four home.
May 28 Russian Emperor won the G1 Champions & Chater Cup over 2400m/1m4f at Sha Tin for the second year running. Although out of Australian G1 winner Atlantic Jewel, his fourth dam is the 1988 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Pass The Paz, also the fourth dam of Bolthole, winner of the listed Grand Prix de Bordeaux over 1900m/1m1.5f the day before.
May 29 Three winners for Kodiac included a double at Windsor where Nine Tenths won a 6f novice and Valkyrian won the 1m handicap. His other winner was Hala Emaraaty in the 2yo 5f novice at Redcar.
May 29 Spring Promise, winner of the listed Grosser Preis der Hannoverschen Volksbank over 1400m/7f at Hanover, is from the same family as Soul Sister, winner of the Musidora Stakes earlier in the month (see May 17). Spring Promise’s fourth dam Truly Especial, winner of the G3 Prix de Royaumont, is Soul Sister’s great grandam.
