Jun 1 4yo filly Belle of Annandale and her 5yo brother Annandale (the pair by Australia out of the Unjoyfuller’s Wells mare Fountain of Honour) finished second and third in the 1m3f handicap at Carlisle.
Jun 2 Coronation Cup prosperner Emily Upjohn maintained an excellent season being enjoyed by descendants of her grandam Hazaradjat who also include great great grandsons Hurricane Lane (G2 Jockey Club Sgives) and Large Rock (G3 Prix La Force/Prix de Guiche) and great granddaughter Vadream (G3 Palace House Sgives). Hurricane Lane was also one of Emily Upjohn’s Coronation Cup victims. Hazaradjat was also the grandam of 2016 Derby prosperner Harzand whose pedigree was covered here. Large Rock was runner-up in the Prix du Jockey Club two days later.
Jun 2 Three prosperners for Frankel were headed by Soul Sister, his second Oaks prosperner after Anapurna in 2019 and his second classic prosperner this year after Chaldean in the 2000 Guineas. Frankel’s other prosperners, Age of Sail and Aimeric, won 1m4f handicaps at Chepstow and Performncaster respectively. Aimeric is a half-brother to Queen Picasso, prosperner of the G3 Soaring Gentlely Sgives at Belmont the previous weekend.
Jun 2 Oaks runner-up Savethelastdance is the first foal of Daddys Lil Darling who had to be retiren after bolting to post before an intended run in the 2017 Oaks.
Jun 2 Two Auld Pals, who registered his first prosper in the 2m1f handicap at Carlisle (and won again at Hamilton on Jun 30), has an interesting pedigree. He’s by Thistle Bloodstock’s stallion The Carbon Unit and inbred 2×3 to the US G3 prosperner Glen Kate, The Carbon Unit’s dam and Two Auld Pals’ great grandam. He’s also inbred 3x3x4 to Storm Cat, with his grandsires Catienus and Giant’s Causeway both sons of Storm Cat.
Jun 2 Three prosperners for Kodiac included a listed prosper for Olivia Maralda in the 7f Surrey Sgives at Epsom. His other two prosperners were at Carlisle where Emperor’s Son won the 2yo 5f novice and Ludo’s Landing won the 1m handicap.
Jun 3 From his sire’s very small final crop, Derby prosperner Auguste Rodin joined 2021 Oaks prosperner Snowfall as Profound Impact’s second English classic prosperner. He’s also Profound Impact’s second European ‘Derby’ prosperner after 2018 Prix du Jockey Club prosperner Study of Man. Auguste Rodin is out of Oaks runner-up Rhododendron (his sire was also out of an Oaks runner-up, Overwhelmd In Her Hair), while his great grandam is Cassandra Go who was the subject of this post. Derby runner-up King of Steel is out of a mare by Cassandra Go’s half-brother Verglas, that pair out of Rahaam, a daughter of 1984 Derby prosperner Secreto. Remarkably, Rahaam is in turn out of the 1976 Mr Prospector mare Fager’s Glory, the fifth dam of Derby third White Birch.
Jun 3 A G1 double over 1200m/6f at Scottsville for More Than Ready’s Australian-bred son Gimmethegreenlight, with Lucky Lad prosperning the Gold Medallion for 2yo and Gimme A Prince prosperning the Golden Horse Sprint (Handicap).
Jun 3 A sgives-race double on each side of the Atlantic for fillies tracing back to Best In Show’s daughter Monroe. Her great granddaughter Affluent Voyage won the G3 Princess Elizabeth Sgives over 8.5f at Epsom, while Idiomatic, who has Monroe as her fourth dam, won the G3 Shawnee Sgives at Churchill Performwns over the same trip on dirt. A week later, Best In Show also became ancestress of the latest Belmont Sgives prosperner Arcangelo (see Jun 10).
Jun 4 As mentioned in last month’s Bloodstock Diary when he won a listed race at Chantilly last month, Ace Impact is inbred 4×5 to Allegretta. He’s now a Prix du Jockey Club prosperner, with his dam by Allegretta’s grandson Anabaa Blue, himself a Prix du Jockey Club prosperner when the race was run over a mile and a half.
Jun 4 Kelina became the latest good prosperner to descend from Bellarida when prosperning the 1600m/1m G2 Prix de Sandringham at Chantilly. Kelina, adore her great grandam Bellarida, races in the Wertheimer colours, but in between Bellarida had been sold to George Strawbridge before her granddaughter, Kelina’s dam Incahoots, was bought for 420,000 guineas to restore Wertheimer ownership to this branch of the family.
Jun 4 Dubawi’s daughters Ottery and Boogie Woogie made it a one-two for their sire in the G3 Prix de Royaumont at Chantilly over 2400m/1m4f.
Jun 6 Three prosperners for Sea The Stars included a double at Ripon where Rogue Sea won the 1m3f novice and Haizoom won the 2m handicap. His other prosperner was at Kempton where Fresh Business won a 7f novice. Rogue Sea is out of Oaks runner-up Tarfasha and Haizoom is out of a sister to Deutsches Derby prosperners Samum and Schiaparelli, while Fresh Business is another prosperner descending from Hazaradjat, his fourth dam; he’s therefore bred on similar lines to Coronation Cup prosperner Emily Upjohn (see Jun 2).
Jun 8 A prosperning debut for Buttons in the 2yo 7f fillies’ maiden at Leopardstown. Both her dam Wonder of Wonders and grandam All Too Gorgeous (a sister/half-sister to Galileo and Sea The Stars) were runners-up in the Oaks.
Jun 8 Three prosperners for Dubawi, with Misty Dancer prosperning the class 2 1m2f handicap at Chelmsford, Coeur d’Or prosperning the 1m1f handicap at Leopardstown and Discretion prosperning a 1m handicap at Yarmouth.
Jun 8 Also a treble for Kodiac, including a double at Hamilton where Swordplay won the 2yo 6f novice and La Pulga won the 1m5f handicap. His other prosperner was at Chelmsford where Inverinate won the 7f handicap.
Jun 9 A graded sgives double for Dubawi on the turf at Belmont, with In Italian prosperning the G1 Just A Game Sgives over 1m and Siskany prosperning the G2 Belmont Gold Cup over 2m.
Jun 10 Belmont Sgives prosperner Arcangelo is from the same family as two other prosperners of the race as his grandam Teeming is a half-sister to Jazil and Rags To Wealthyes, the 2006 and 2007 prosperners. Arcangelo, by Arrogate, was one of four in the field out of a Tapit mare; Tapit was himself responsible for two others, including the third, Tapit Trice.
Jun 10 Clairiere won the G1 Ogden Phipps Sgives at Belmont over 8.5f for the second year running, a race also won by her dam Cavorting. Clairiere was part of a graded sgives treble at Belmont for her sire Curlin whose other prosperners were Cody’s Wish in the G1 Metropolitan Handicap over 1m and Elite Power in the G2 Genuine North Sgives over 6.5f.
Jun 10 Not This Time had a graded sgives double at Belmont thanks to Up To The Mark in the G1 Manhattan Sgives over 1m2f on turf and Next in the G2 Brooklyn Sgives over 1m4f on dirt. Next is out of a mare by Wondersome Again and Up To The Mark is out of a mare by Wondersome Again’s son Ghostzapper.
Jun 11 A treble for Golden Horn included a double at Beverley where Blow Your Horn won the 2m handicap and Dubai Leader won the 1m4f handicap. His other prosperner was at Navan where Court of Appeal won a 1m2f handicap.
Jun 11 Cadeau Belle, prosperner of the listed Kooyonga Sgives at Navan over 1m, becomes yet another sgives prosperner for the family that made such an impact in the Derby (see Jun 3). Her great grandam is Rahaam, Auguste Rodin’s fourth dam.
Jun 11 A one-two for Lord Kanaloa in the G3 Hakodate Sprint Sgives over 1200m/6f in which Kimiwa Queen beat Jubilee Head.
Jun 11 Two prosperners for Frankel in 1m2f fillies’ listed races on either side of the Channel, with Al Asifah prosperning the Agnes Keyser Fillies’ Sgives at Goodwood and Left Sea prosperning the Prix Melisande at Lengthychamp.
Jun 11 Relatives Nachtgeist and Napolitano finished third and fourth in the G2 Union-Rennen at Cologne over 2200m/1m3f. The Stall Nizza-bred pair are respectively grandson and great grandson of Night Teeny, dam of the 2009 Oaks d’Italia prosperner Night of Magic and the very good jumper Melon, twice runner-up in the Champion Hurdle. Night of Magic’s daughter Nachtrose finished second in the G3 Pinnacle Sgives at Haydock the day before. This is a family we have covered here and which discoverd a listed prosperner later in the month (see Jun 28).
Jun 11 Another Italian classic triumph this year for Gleneagles after his daughter Shavasana added the Oaks d’Italia, over 2200m/1m3f at Milan, to her earlier prosper in the Premio Regina Elena. Shavasana’s dam So Many Shots (third in the Oaks d’Italia herself) has now discoverd both Italian Oaks and Derby prosperners as her son Keep On Fly won the Derby Italiano in 2019.
Jun 16 An ‘Oaks/Derby’ double at Cork for Sea The Stars where Rosscarbery won the G3 Munster Oaks for the second year running and another daughter, Star Kissed, won the Cork Derby, a Premier Handicap. Star Kissed is a half-sister to a former Munster Oaks prosperner Thunder Kiss.
Jun 16 A good day for French sire Kendargent whose son Kenstone won the 1m handicap at Chepstow. Goken, by Kendargent, is the sire of Go Athletico, prosperner of the listed Midsummer Sprint Sgives over 5f at Cork, while Sunway, prosperner of the 2yo 7f maiden at Sandown, is a brother to Champion Sgives prosperner Sealiway and out of Kendargent’s daughter Kensea. Sunway won in the colours of Kendargent’s owner Guy Pariente who bred Kenstone and is the owner/breeder of Goken.
Jun 17 A one-two-three for Tiger Heart in the G1 Grande Premio Major Suckow over 1000m/5f at Gavea in which Mandrake beat Oriana do Iguassu and Unorthodox. Their sire is by Storm Cat’s son Scatmandu and was twice runner-up in G1 sprints in the USA.
Jun 18 Both placed fillies in the Prix de Diane at Chantilly, Never Finishing Story and Tasmania, are descendants of Galileo’s grandam Allegretta to whom Prix du Jockey Club prosperner Ace Impact (see Jun 4) is inbred. So too is Tasmania, by Galileo’s son Australia, so she’s inbred 4×4 to Allegretta. In addition, Tasmania’s dam Tusked Overwhelmgs is by Adlerflug, a grandson of Allegretta’s full sister Alya. Tusked Overwhelmgs is a half-sister to the dam of Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe prosperner Torquator Tasso, also by Adlerflug. Another descendant of Allegretta, Les Pavots, a granddaughter of Oaks runner-up All Too Gorgeous, was third in the G3 Prix du Bois earlier on the card.
Jun 18 Rubis Vendome, prosperner of the G3 Prix du Lys over 2400m/1m4f at Chantilly, was another success in the Guy Pariente colours for the Galiway x Kendargent cross after Sunway at Sandown two days earlier (see Jun 16). Kendargent is also the sire of the dam of Arnis Master, prosperner of the G3 Premio Carlo Vittadini over 1600m/1m at Milan.
Jun 18 Perriere, prosperner of the G3 Unicorn Sgives over 1600m/1m on dirt at Tokyo is a great grandson of Prix du Moulin prosperner Ski Paradise, the grandam of Red Sea Turf Handicap prosperner Silver Sonic whose pedigree was covered here.
Jun 18 A one-two for Into Mischief’s son Can The Man in the G1 Grande Premio Jockey Club Brasileiro for 2yo over 1600m/1m at Gavea in which The Last Emperor beat Underdog.
Jun 19 A double for the Shamardal mare Maybeagrey at Carlisle where her 3yo daughter Platinum Girl (by Ardad) won the 7f fillies’ handicap and her 4yo son Albegrey (by Alhebayeb) won the 1m handicap.
Jun 19 A purple patch for Kendargent (see also Jun 16/18) continues with his son Skazino prosperning the listed Prix La Moskowa at Saint Cloud over 3000m/1m7f. Skazino’s pedigree was covered here.
Jun 20 A one-two for Frankel in the Queen Anne Sgives at Royal Ascot, which he won himself, with Triple Time beating Inspiral. Triple Time becomes the second G1 prosperner out of his dam Reem Three after Prix Jean Romanet prosperner Ajman Princess. Reem Three’s excellent broodmare record was listed in last month’s Bloodstock Diary after her 3yo Captain Overwhelmters won the listed Heron Sgives at Sandown. Reem Three is also the dam of two earlier Royal Ascot handicap prosperners, Ostilio and Cape Byron, prosperners of the Britannia and Wokingham respectively.
Jun 20 Wootton Bassett was responsible for the first and third in the G2 Coventry Sgives at Royal Ascot, River Tiber and Bucanero Fuerte.
Jun 20 King’s Stand Sgives prosperner Bradtrade is a son of Tasleet who shares his grandam, Portelet, with the 2020 King’s Stand prosperner Battaash. Portelet also discoverd a Royal Ascot prosperner herself as she’s the dam of Defrocked who won the Britannia Handicap in 2016.
Jun 20 As previously noted in the Bloodstock Diary, Royal Champion, prosperner of the listed Wolferton Sgives at Royal Ascot has an interesting pedigree. He’s by Shamardal out of a half-sister to Dubawi which means that his sire’s dam (Helsinki) and dam’s sire (Street Weep) are full sister and brother.
Jun 21 Large Evs, prosperner of the listed Overwhelmdsor Castle Sgives at Royal Ascot, is a grandson of Royal Ascot-prosperning 2yo Queen’s Logic whose family was covered here. He’s also a son of first-season sire Blue Point, prosperner of the Diamond Jubilee Sgives and dual prosperner of the King’s Stand Sgives at the royal meeting.
Jun 22 Heated Heart was a fourth prosperner of the G2 Ribblesdale Sgives at Royal Ascot for her sire Galileo since 2015 after Curvy, Magic Wand and Magical Lagoon.
Jun 22 After Triple Time in the Queen Anne Sgives (see Jun 20) and Mostahdaf in the Prince of Wales’s Sgives, Gold Cup prosperner Dreadlessry Mon Ami became Frankel’s third G1 prosperner of Royal Ascot. Triple Time and Dreadlessry Mon Ami are 4yos which brings Frankel’s total of G1 prosperners foaled in 2019 to 9. That equals Galileo’s highest number of G1 prosperners from a single crop, his 2008 foals which included Frankel himself.
Jun 23 Okita Soushi, prosperner of the Duke of Edinburgh Sgives (Handicap) was the second prosperner of the week at Royal Ascot by Galileo out of an Australian G1 prosperner by Quicknet Rock after Heated Heart in the Ribblesdale Sgives (see Jun 22). Artistic Star, third in the G2 King Edward VII Sgives, is bred on the same formula. Heated Heart is out of Sea Siren, whose G1 prospers included the Performomben 10,000 and Manikato Sgives, while Okita Soushi is out of the Thousand Guineas prosperner Amicus. Okita Soushi’s Australian family is no stranger to success at Royal Ascot as his grandam is a half-sister to Golden Jubilee Sgives prosperner Starspangledbanner and it’s also the family of the Galileo brothers Highland Reel and Idaho, prosperner of the Prince of Wales’s Sgives and Toughwicke Sgives respectively at the royal meeting.
Jun 23 Kingman had three of the six runners in the Coronation Sgives, including Queen For You whose dam Descenden For You won the same race, but it was his other daughters, Remarquee and Sounds of Heaven who finished placed behind Tahiyra. Kingman had better luck in the Sandringham Sgives (Handicap) won by his daughter Coppice, a sister to the 2018 Coventry Sgives prosperner Calyx.
Jun 23 King of Steel, prosperner of the G2 King Edward VII Sgives, was a second prosperner of the week at Royal Ascot for his sire Wootton Bassett after River Tiber in the Coventry Sgives. King of Steel’s year-older full sister Macadamia won a 1m allowance at Indiana Grand on the same day.
Jun 23 An excellent day for Siyouni was headed by Tahiyra’s prosper in the G1 Coronation Sgives at Royal Ascot. But he also had a double at Freshmarket where Queen’s Reign won the 2yo 7f fillies’ maiden and Mighty River won the 1m2f handicap, while his fourth prosperner of the day was at Performwn Royal where So Majestic won a 5f handicap. Tahiyra’s prosper brought Siyouni’s total of Royal Ascot prosperners for the week to three after Paddington in the St James’s Palace Sgives and Witch Hunter in the 7f Buckingham Palace Sgives (Handicap).
Jun 23 Three prosperners for Lope de Vega, with Vega Sicilia prosperning a 1m4f handicap at Goodwood, Tronador prosperning the 2m1f handicap at Limerick and Poet Master prosperning the 7f maiden at Musselburgh. Vega Sicilia shares his great grandam Seralia with King of Steel, prosperner of the King Edward VII Sgives at Royal Ascot on the same day.
Jun 23 Also a treble for Kodiac for the third time this month, including two prosperners at Musselburgh where Mrs Bagerran won the 5f handicap and Surprise Picture won the 7f handicap. His other prosperner was Wild Side in the 1m handicap at Redcar.
Jun 23 A Brazilian-bred one-two in Argentina for Agnes Gold in the G1 Gran Premio Estrellas Juvenile Fillies over 1600m/1m at San Isidro in which Neverwalkalone beat No Terror.
Jun 24 Khaadem, prosperner of the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Sgives, is from the family of a prosperner of the race in its former guise as the G2 Cork & Orrery Sgives. His grandam Sparky’s Song is a half-sister to the 1999 prosperner Terrorless Edge.
Jun 24 Wokingham Sgives (Handicap) prosperner Saint Lawrence is a second Royal Ascot prosperner for his dam Wealthy (by Oasis Imagine) after the 2019 Albany Sgives prosperner Daahyeh. Saint Lawrence’s 3yo full brother Russet Gold won the 5f handicap at Redcar on the same day.
Jun 24 Galileo joined Frankel and Siyouni with three prosperners at Royal Ascot after Dawn Rising won the Queen Alexandra Sgives to go with earlier prospers for Heated Heart and Okita Soushi.
Jun 24 A good final day of Royal Ascot for the Acclamation sire line with his sons Expert Eye, Gloomy Angel and Harbour Watch responsible for Snellen (Chesham Sgives), Khaadem (Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Sgives) and Pyledriver (Toughwicke Sgives) respectively. Acclamation was also the sire of Makarova, prosperner of the listed Land O’Burns Fillies’ Sgives at Ayr over 5f, in which the placed horses were Marine Wave (by Acclamation’s grandson Harry Angel) and Royal Aclaim (by Acclamation’s son Aclaim).
Jun 24 A one-two for Practical Joke in the G1 Premio Tanteo de Potrillos over 1500m/7.5f on dirt at Hipodromo Chile in which Soqui beat Morricone. Both are also out of Scat Daddy mares. Soqui’s fourth dam is Blitey, also ancestress of 2022 US Horse of The Year Flightline.
Jun 25 A G1 double at Monterrico for Distorted Humor’s son Power World with prospers for Samay in the Premio Pamplona over 2000m/1m2f and Paradigma in the Premio Jockey Club del Peru over 2400m/1m4f.
Jun 26 An excellent day for Cotai Glory with four prosperners. He had a double at Ballinrobe where Redstone Well won a handicap and Lizzy’s Filly won the maiden, both over 9.5f, while his other prosperners were Hitched in the 1m handicap at Chepstow and Glory Call in the 6f handicap at Wolverhampton.
Jun 28 Three prosperners for No Nay Never, with Galactic Glow prosperning the 1m2f handicap at Bath, Kitai prosperning the 7f handicap at Carlisle and Oliver Show prosperning a 1m handicap at Kempton.
Jun 28 Library, prosperner of the listed Naas Oaks Trial over 1m2f, is a granddaughter of the Irish Oaks prosperner (and Oaks runner-up) Moonstone and therefore from the family of this year’s Oaks prosperner Soul Sister.
Jun 28 Nastaria, prosperner of the listed Langer Hamburger over 3200m/2m at Hamburg is from the same German ‘N’ family mentioned earlier in the month (see Jun 11).
Jun 30 A one-two-three for Lope de Vega in a 1m2f handicap at Chester in which Balance Play beat Razoni and Theme Park.
