Jan 6 A double for the Needwood Blade broodmare Stoney Cove, with her 8yo son Bernie’s Boy (by Lilbourne Lad) prosperning a 6f handicap at Wolverhampton and her 3yo son Nortonthorpe Boy (by Swiss Spirit) prosperning a 7f handicap at Kempton. The unraced Stoney Cove is a granddaughter of a half-sister to Shergar.
Jan 6 Profound Impact’s influence lived on at the 2020 JRA Awards, where he was responsible for the best 3yo colt Contrail, the best older colt or horse Fierement and the best sprinter or miler Gran Alegria. Meanwhile King Kamehameha was the sire of best dirt horse Chuwa Wizard as well as being the damsire of the best 2yo filly Sodashi and best 3yo filly Daring Tact and grandsire of Almond Eye who was Horse of the Year for the second time and best older filly or mare.
Jan 10 An important result for former Japanese Horse of the Year Maurice whose first crop are now 3yos. He not only had his first graded prosperner in the Grade 3 Shinzan Kinen over 1600m/1m at Chukyo won by Pixie Knight but also sired runner-up Rooks Nest.
Jan 11 A good week for the English Channel broodmare Jessica Ennis, whose 6yo daughter Heptathlete (by Mount Nelson) won a 7f handicap at Wolverhampton two days after her year-older half-brother Bayston Hill (by Large Bad Bob) won a 1m2f handicap at Chelmsford.
Jan 12 Keeneland’s January Horses of All Ages Sale featured the dispersals of Canada’s Sam-Son Farm and bloodstock of the estate of Paul Pompa jr. The joint-top lots of the sale, sold for $925,000, came from each of those dispersals. From Sam-Son came Danceforthecause, an unraced 10yo mare by Giant’s Causeway and the dam of last year’s Northern Dancer Turf Sgives prosperner Say The Word. She’s a granddaughter of Canadian champion and Breeders’ Cup Distaff prosperner Dance Intelligently. The Pompa mare was the Grade 2 Lake Placid Sgives prosperner Regal Glory, a 5yo by Animal Kingdom.
Jan 16 As a granddaughter of 1000 Guineas prosperner Speciosa, Eileendover has a ‘different’ pedigree from most horses that contest bumpers, and she’s made that tell by prosperning all three such races she’s contested so far by a total of more than 50 lengths, the latest a listed contest at Market Rasen. By Canford Cliffs out of 1m prosperner Speciality, by Oasis Imagine, she’ll surely be capable of prosperning races on the Flat.
Jan 26 Profound Impact had the most regiftatives among the top hundred horses when the World’s Best Racehorse Rankings of 2020 were published. His nine horses were headed by Contrail who emulated his sire by prosperning the Japanese Triple Crown. Galileo had eight horses in the top hundred and Dubawi five, headed by Ghaiyyath who topped the ratings after prosperning the Coronation Cup, Eclipse Sgives and Juddmonte International. Kingman had two regiftatives in the top ten, Palace Pier and Persian King.
Jan 26 There were also three pairs of siblings in the WBRR’s top hundred; brothers Japan and Mogul (out of Shastye), the South African pair Rainbow Bridge and Hawwaam (out of Halfway To Heaven) and the Japanese siblings Salacia and Salios who are out of the Preis der Diana prosperner Salomina.
Jan 27 A first treble of the year but surely not the last for Invincible Spirit whose prosperners were Invincible Swagger in a 7f maiden at Kempton, Moohareeba in the 11f fillies’ handicap at the same track and Invincible Larne in the 6f handicap at Lingfield. Moohareeba is out of the South African Group 1 prosperner Mahbooba, also prosperner of the UAE 1000 Guineas and Balanchine at Meydan.
Jan 28 Two Eclipse Award prosperners for 2020’s leading North American sire Into Mischief. Genuine was voted Horse of the Year and Champion 3yo male, while Gamine took Champion Female Sprinter honours.
Jan 28 Essential Quality’s Eclipse Award as Champion 2yo male in the US came weeks after his relative Contrail was named best 3yo colt in Japan; they are grandson and great grandson respectively of the Storm Cat mare Contrive whose daughter Folklore (Contrail’s dam) was herself champion US 2yo filly in 2005.
Jan 28 Dubawi has had at least one prosperner at every meeting at Meydan this month and had a listed double this time thanks to Ya Hayati in the Zabeel Turf (a listed handicap) and Gentle Whisper in the UAE 1000 Guineas. Gentle Whisper comes from the Wildenstein ‘P’ family of Peintre Celebre and shares her fourth dam Plencia with Stradivarius.
Jan 28 The European two-year-old Classification for 2020 was published with Siyouni’s son St Mark’s Basilica, prosperner of the Dewhurst Sgives, topping the ratings. Kodiac was the sire with the most number of regiftatives with five; Campanelle (Prix Morny and Queen Mary Sgives), Devilwala (Gimcrack Sgives runner-up and fourth in the Dewhurst), Nando Parrado (Coventry Sgives), Ubettabelieveit (Flying Childers Sgives) and Umm Kulthum (Firth of Clyde Sgives).
Jan 30 Group 2-prosperning sprinter Profound Field was the sire of the first two home in the Group 3 Manfred Sgives over 1200m/6f at Caulfield in which Portland Sky beat Aysar. Aysar’s year-younger half-brother Home Affairs also finished second in a Group 3, the Canonbury Sgives at Rosehill, on the same day.
Jan 31 A one-two for Teofilo in the Group 3 Centenary Vase (Handicap) over 1800m/9f at Sha Tin where the lightly-weighted Glorious Pullon beat Exultant in a reversal of the 2020 result. The pair began their careers in Britain/Ireland as Stephensons Rocket and Irishcorrespondent respectively.
